Free drop-in Legal Clinic at Holbeach Meadows Care Home

Mary Dack and Joseph Burns from local solicitors Mossop and Bowser visited Holbeach Meadows Care Home to meet with Home Manager Gemma and have a tour of the home.  The focus was to be how the two companies could work together to help the local community.  A return visit saw Gemma delivering cupcakes to the legal firm to thank them for their support.

Gemma Woodcock commented, “Managing a Residential Home, I often see families dealing with the legalities of selling properties and making decisions for their loved ones that they have not had to consider before.  This is somewhat of a legal minefield, most people understand they need something in place to take over a relative’s financial affairs, but don’t know how to go about it.  Unfortunately, many people presume that, as next of kin, they can make decisions on people’s health and welfare for them, if they are unable to make the decision themselves, but that is not the case, there needs to be a legal process in place for that too.  I will always recommend to residents and their families to look into arranging a Lasting Power of Attorney so that, if the time comes when the resident is unable to make decisions for themselves, the family can legally step in and take over their affairs.  If a person loses the mental capacity to make these decisions for themselves, and there is no Lasting Power of Attorney in place, families would then need to go through the courts for Deputyship to be appointed.”

Gemma went on to say “I recently met with Mary and Joe from local solicitors Mossop and Bowser, I am so pleased to be able to work with them to help people and their families understand these processes and answer any questions people may have about these issues.  We are holding a drop-in clinic at Holbeach Meadows, for people to come along, have a cup of tea or coffee and chat with one of the Mossop and Bowser team, for free advice about Lasting Power of Attorney, Deputyship, or even wills.  My team and I will also be on hand to answer any questions about moving into a care home or any other care related issues.”

The event is entirely free and open to everyone, please pop along and ask away!

The drop-in clinic will run from 4-7pm on Thursday 25th May at Holbeach Meadows Care Home, Daisy Road, Holbeach PE12 7NJ and is open to the general public.
